Most of us know that traffic poses various dangers. In order to increase traffic safety, we need to moderate our speed, fasten our seat belts, and be in good driving condition, amongst other things. It is important to keep the discussion about road safety alive, as fatal road accidents are one of the leading causes of premature death, both in Iceland and worldwide.

Some helpful tips

  • Make sure to always respect the speed limit and assess speed based on the circumstances.

  • Keep a good distance between cars, especially in icy conditions in winter.

  • Always keep your phone in your pocket.

  • Always be well-rested, alert, and free from fatigue when we get into a car.

  • Use the turn signals.

  • Did you know?

  • 2% of Icelandic drivers consider themselves to be below average drivers.

  • Lack of use of turn signals, cell phone use, and driving too slowly are the most annoying issues for drivers.

  • 18-20% of those killed in traffic accidents over the past two decades would probably be alive today if they had worn seat belts.

  • 79% of Icelanders find it unacceptable to drive a car after consuming alcohol, 70% an electric scooter and 50% a bicycle.

  • 22% admit to texting while driving.

  • Probably 4% of drivers have fallen asleep behind the wheel in the last six months, based on research from previous years.

You can access more detailed information about traffic laws and traffic statistics on the Icelandic Transport Authority's website. There is also very useful information about road traffic and weather on the Icelandic Road Administration website.
