His­tory of Vörður

From Vélbátatrygging Eyjafjarðar to Vörður tryggingar hf.

Vörður is a young insurance company with a long history. The company's roots can be traced all the way back to 1926, when Vélbátasamtrygging Eyjafjarðar was founded.

The company was later renamed Vélbátatrygging Eyjafjarðar GT, and in 1998 the name was changed to Vörður vátryggingafélag hf.

At the end of 2004, it was decided to merge Vörður vátryggingafélag with Íslandstrygging hf., a company that had been founded in 2002. At the start of 2005, the merged company began operating under the name Vörður Íslandstrygging.

In November 2006, the company's ownership changed when Eignarhaldsfélagið ehf. acquired all of the company's shares. Eignarhaldsfélagið was owned by SP-Fjármögnun, Landsbankinn, and BYR sparisjóður. The new owners' intention was to strengthen the company's operations and make it a viable alternative to the three existing companies in the market. Following this, the company's name was changed to Vörður tryggingar hf.
